Lead detected
UC Berkeley's 2024 study — the first of its kind — found lead in tampons across 14 major brands at a mean of 120 ppb. That's 24× the FDA's allowable limit for bottled drinking water.
PFAS positive
22% of conventional tampons tested positive for PFAS indicators (Mamavation / Environmental Health News, 2022). 48% of pads did the same.
Cadmium
Trace heavy metals — cadmium at 6.74 ppb, arsenic at 2.56 ppb — appear across brands. Some may be added deliberately, for whitening, antimicrobial purposes, or odour reduction.
Forever chemicals
PFAS do not break down. They accumulate — in water, in soil, in bodies — over a lifetime of use. California banned them in menstrual products in January 2025.
